Dr. Rob Fawcett |
Physician earns praise from his patients and colleagues
Rob Fawcett decided he was going to be a physician when he was 12 years old in 1960. That’s the year his parents purchased a set of World Book encyclopedias.
Fawcett became fascinated with the section that featured cellophane overlays of the various organ systems of the human body. He studied the individual organs and where they were located. And, he read many of the medically related encyclopedia entries.
Entering his 34th year as a family physician, Dr. Fawcett, associate program director, York Hospital Family Medicine Residency, has enjoyed a long and rewarding career filled with numerous achievements and awards.
Fawcett recently received statewide recognition of his extraordinary work when he was named 2012 Family Physician of the Year by the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians.
"I was surprised I won because there are so many family medicine physicians doing such great work throughout the state," said Fawcett. "But, that also adds to the honor of the award."
Fawcett said he’s proud to be a family physician and lucky to have practiced a full range of family medicine, including OB, critical care, pediatrics, geriatrics and sports medicine. He had a private practice for 19 years in Hanover before joining the Family Medicine Residency faculty at York Hospital in 1998.
Patients, physicians and colleagues praise Fawcett’s work and dedication. Patients Jack and Sue Silcox said, "We are both in our 80s and over the years we have found Dr. Fawcett to be genuinely concerned about helping us stay healthy. How blessed we are to have a doctor who is so caring and so efficient. He is not only our doctor, he is a true friend."
Serves as a role model
Dr. Andre Lijoi, associate program director, York Hospital Family Medicine Residency, was named the Pennsylvania Family Physician of the Year in 2008. In his nomination of Fawcett for the state award, Lijoi wrote, "Dr. Fawcett is a role model for all of us. His passion for his patients and what is best for them is inspirational. He has a connection to and an understanding of his patients that is therapeutic. He is highly principled and will stand by his principles no matter the cost."
Lijoi added, "Rob is a remarkably unique family physician, committed to all the tenets of what we do and who leaves a mark everywhere he goes."
Dr. Bruce Bushwick, chairman of Family Medicine at York Hospital, also nominated Fawcett.
He wrote, "He (Dr. Fawcett) is intellectually curious, analytically rigorous and strives to understand his patients’ medical problems in depth. He is a superb diagnostician who provides cost-effective and evidence-based care…a highly regarded educator…an excellent administrator…and an accomplished writer."
Bushwick added, "Rob is a complete family physician who is driven by passion—passion to care for patients with excellence; passion to share his expertise through teaching; passion to challenge others to be their best and passion to go the extra mile for our community and those in need."
