WellSpan York Hospital is one of just five U.S. sites featured at Denver cardiovascular conference
Eyes from around the world were on WellSpan York Hospital this afternoon, as two WellSpan interventional cardiologists successfully completed two complex, minimally invasive procedures during a live broadcast to an international conference of cardiovascular specialists.
William Nicholson, M.D., and James Harvey, M.D., both of WellSpan Cardiology, performed the two cases. Both procedures were live-streamed and broadcast to the Cardiovascular Innovations 2018 conference, held in Denver, Colo.
WellSpan York Hospital was one of only five hospitals in the nation scheduled to be featured as a live case site, with hospitals from as far away as France and Italy also broadcasting cases to the three-day conference.

Nicholson and Harvey performed two procedures simultaneously that were broadcast live to the conference attendees. One complex procedure involved a coronary artery revascularization technique Nicholson has been touted as first in the country to perform, which involves cauterizing through a blockage in a chronic total occlusions (CTO), or completely blocked artery. The second procedure included the placement of a stent and required the use of an advanced device to assist the patient’s heart during the procedure.
Both minimally-invasive procedures were performed on patients who suffer from complex coronary artery disease. The expertise of Nicholson and Harvey in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as stenting, played a major role in WellSpan York Hospital’s selection as a conference broadcast site.
